Tanga, Tanzania – October 10, 2024 – The Deputy Minister of Mines, Dr. Steven Kiruswa, today officially opened the general meeting for the election of new leaders for the Federation of Tanzanian Miners’ Associations (FEMATA). The event, held in Tanga, gathered miners from across the country to elect their new representatives in line with the federation’s constitution.
During his opening address, Dr. Kiruswa urged FEMATA members to conduct the elections in a transparent and fair manner. He emphasized that the government remains committed to addressing the challenges facing miners and called on the incoming leadership to prioritize resolving the issues brought forward by the federation’s members.
“President, let me give an order to the leadership elected today. After this election concludes, prepare a meeting that will address all the concerns raised by the miners. The government is here to listen, and we will continue to work on unresolved matters,” said Dr. Kiruswa.
Outgoing FEMATA President John Wambura, who is seeking re-election, highlighted the federation’s progress under his leadership, including significant growth in the mining sector and increased income for small-scale miners. He noted that one of FEMATA’s major accomplishments during his term was the establishment of a formal mineral market, which has helped streamline operations for miners.
“When I assumed office, there was no organized mineral market. Through FEMATA’s efforts, we have worked with the government to establish this market. Moreover, we have strengthened the relationship between the government and miners, leading to a more collaborative approach in addressing our challenges,” Wambura stated.
Wambura also commended the government’s support, noting that FEMATA’s meetings consistently attract high-level government officials, underscoring the strong partnership between the federation and the authorities.
As the election unfolds, all eyes are on the leadership candidates, with members hopeful that the new team will continue advocating for miners’ rights and addressing their concerns.
The elected leaders are expected to hold a follow-up meeting to provide clear responses and solutions to the issues raised during the election period, further strengthening the sector’s development and promoting transparency in the country’s mining industry.
