The Minister of Minerals Anthony Mavunde announced Tanzania’s goal to become Africa’s largest graphite producer. Currently, Tanzania contributes only 0.64% to Africa’s graphite production, while Madagascar and Mozambique account for 13% and 10%, respectively.
Mavunde stated that ten companies holding graphite mining licenses are poised to start production, aiming to increase Tanzania’s market share.
Mavunde announced that Tanzania will also be hosting the 5th International Mining Investment Conference from November 19-21, 2024, at the Julius Nyerere International Convention Centre in Dar es Salaam. Stating that it will bring together international stakeholders in the mining sector, including investors, mineral researchers, miners, government representatives, foreign leaders, and ambassadors from various nations.
The theme of the conference is “Mineral Value Addition for Social and Economic Development.”
Mavunde emphasized the importance of discussing unique investment opportunities in mineral value addition and extraction, particularly in light of the increasing global demand for critical minerals.
He noted that the conference aligns with President Samia Suluhu Hassan’s directive to ensure that all minerals mined in Tanzania undergo local processing to enhance their value and create job opportunities for Tanzanians.
The conference will serve as a platform for discussions that will provide new direction for the country’s mining sector and facilitate technology transfer. The event will also include a “Night of Minerals,” showcasing Tanzania’s gemstone wealth and recognizing outstanding companies and miners for their performance.
