Kahama, Shinyanga – In the heart of Tanzania’s mining industry, Asha Hassan Msangi, known as Mama Nakio, is paving the way for women in mining. Her transition from rice farming to small-scale mining has inspired many. As the Chairperson of Manda Gold Mine Group and the holder of 12 Primary Mining Licenses (PMLs), her story reflects resilience, determination, and the breaking of gender barriers.
From Farming to Mining: A Bold Transition
Mama Nakio started her journey as a rice farmer and trader. Despite her success in agriculture, she saw greater opportunities in Tanzania’s growing mining sector. The government’s support, including access to mining licenses, gave her the confidence to make the leap. She moved into mining, acquiring her first PML. Today, she owns 12 PMLs and focuses on gold extraction. This shift transformed her economic standing, making her one of the region’s top small-scale miners.
Advocating for Women in Mining
Beyond her personal achievements, Mama Nakio is passionate about empowering women. She believes women can play vital roles across the entire mining value chain. “Women can contribute not only as miners but also in pricing, mineral purchasing, and providing key services,” she says. Through her leadership, she has inspired and empowered many women to join the sector, proving that success in mining is not limited by gender.
Government Support and Inclusive Policies
The Tanzanian government has played a crucial role in supporting women in mining. Under President Dr. Samia Suluhu Hassan, the country has introduced policies that make it easier for women to enter and succeed in the sector. One of these policies grants mining licenses to small-scale miners, opening doors for many, including Mama Nakio. “I thank President Samia and the Ministry of Minerals for providing us with opportunities and creating an inclusive environment for women,” she says. These policies have helped level the playing field and allowed women like her to thrive in the sector.
Mining for a Brighter Tomorrow
The government’s Mining for a Brighter Tomorrow (MBT) program aims to offer even more support to women and youth in the mining industry. This initiative will provide licenses, equipment, vehicles, and drilling machinery. For Mama Nakio and others, this program brings hope for further growth. “We are excited about the opportunities ahead. With more equipment and licenses, we can achieve even more and inspire the next generation of women miners,” she says.
Breaking Barriers and Inspiring Others
Mama Nakio is breaking barriers and changing perceptions. Her story shows that women can excel in mining and other male-dominated fields. Her message to women is simple: “Don’t be afraid to join the mining sector. There’s a place for you, and you can succeed.”
Conclusion: A Shining Example of Empowerment
As Tanzania’s mining sector grows, women like Mama Nakio are leading the charge. Her transition from farming to mining highlights the power of determination and government support. With initiatives like the Mining for a Brighter Tomorrow program, even more women will have the opportunity to follow in her footsteps.
Mama Nakio’s journey shows that women are not just capable of thriving in mining—they are essential to its future.
