Nyanzaga-Sengerema Gold Mine to Begin Construction in January 2025

The highly anticipated Nyanzaga-Sengerema gold mining project in Tanzania is set to break ground in January 2025. This major development, which was confirmed by the Minister of Minerals, Anthony Mavunde, is expected to create more than 1,500 new jobs, significantly boosting economic growth in the Sengerema region.

During a visit to the district, Minister Mavunde underscored the need for strict adherence to legal procedures, particularly in engaging with local communities through a well-structured Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR) plan. He urged local residents to seize the business and service opportunities that will arise from the mine’s operations.

The Nyanzaga-Sengerema project is a joint venture between the Tanzanian government and Perseus Mining, facilitated by the Sotta company. With a total investment of $500 million, the mine is projected to have an operational lifespan of 10 to 15 years. In a significant move, the Tanzanian government has increased its free-carried interest in the project from 16% to 20%, boosting its share of the mine’s revenues.

Resettlement and compensation efforts are already underway, with more than 20 billion Tanzanian shillings disbursed to affected individuals. Additionally, 232 houses are expected to be completed by May 2025 as part of the comprehensive resettlement plan.

This project is one of the largest mining initiatives undertaken during President Samia Suluhu Hassan’s administration, further cementing Tanzania’s role as a key player in the global mining industry.
