The Tanzanian government has earmarked 14 billion Tanzanian shillings to compensate residents of Engaruka Ward in Monduli District, Arusha Region, in preparation for constructing a new soda ash production facility. The project is spearheaded by the National Development Corporation (NDC). It is anticipated to commence soon, according to Dr. Selemani Jafo, the Minister for Industry and Trade, who recently visited the project site.
Dr. Jafo assured that all individuals eligible for compensation have been identified through a thorough verification process conducted by the government. He emphasized the importance of transparency in the compensation process and urged residents to refrain from making false claims.
The Minister also called on the Monduli District leadership to conduct a detailed survey of the surrounding areas to ensure the development of residential, industrial, and commercial zones in a well-organized manner. He stressed the need for rapid infrastructure development, including roads, water supply, and electricity, to support the project’s smooth implementation. Such infrastructure is vital for transporting materials and setting up the necessary equipment for mineral processing.
The proposed soda ash plant is expected to play a significant role in the local and international markets, particularly benefiting industries involved in glass manufacturing, pharmaceuticals, and other products.
Festus Kiswaga, the Monduli District Commissioner, expressed the local leadership’s commitment to facilitating the project’s success. He encouraged residents to take advantage of the opportunities that the project would bring to the area.
Dr. Nicolaus Shombe, the Executive Director of NDC, reported that all preliminary steps for the project have been completed. This includes assessments of the soda ash reserves, a feasibility study, environmental impact evaluations, and the valuation of properties owned by residents. The factory is projected to have an annual production capacity of one million tonnes of soda ash.
